Prague Student Housing 2026: Areas Near Charles University & ČVUT

Prague is one of the world’s most beautiful cities — a UNESCO medieval core, the Charles Bridge, and a 600-year-old university. Charles University (founded 1348) and ČVUT (Czech Technical University, one of Europe’s oldest technical schools) anchor a student population of 90,000+. Best of all: rent is roughly one-third of London or Paris.

Charles University

Staré Město & Josefov: The Old Town and Jewish Quarter. Living in the historic centre is tourist-heavy but impossibly beautiful. Mostly expensive short-term rentals, but some student flats exist. Rooms CZK 8,000–14,000/month (€320–560).

Vinohrady: Prague’s most desirable residential neighborhood. Art Nouveau apartment buildings, Riegrovy Sady beer garden with castle views, and the best cafe culture. 10–15 min tram to Charles University. Rooms CZK 7,000–12,000/month (€280–480).

Žižkov: Prague’s traditionally working-class, now rapidly gentrifying student quarter. The highest pub-per-capita density of any Prague district. 10 min bus/tram. Rooms CZK 6,000–10,000/month (€240–400).

ČVUT (Dejvice)

Dejvice & Bubeneč: Campus area, northwest of the castle. 1920s functionalist architecture, embassies, and Letná Park. The Technical University campus is right here. Rooms CZK 7,000–12,000/month.

Holešovice: Former industrial district turned art and cultural quarter. DOX Centre for Contemporary Art, Vnitroblock dance hall and cinema. 10 min tram to ČVUT. Rooms CZK 6,000–11,000/month.

Dormitories (Kolej)

Charles University and ČVUT both operate extensive dormitory systems. A shared room in a dorm block costs CZK 3,000–5,000/month (€120–200). Basic but functional — shared kitchen, shared bathroom, 15–30 min from the centre by tram/metro. The Strahov and Hvězda dorm complexes are legends for their party culture.

Transport

Prague’s public transport is one of the world’s best — metro (3 lines), tram network, and buses that run until midnight (night trams after). A student annual pass costs CZK 1,280 (€51/year). Yes, fifty-one euros for an entire year of unlimited transport.

FAQ

Is Prague actually that cheap? Yes — and unbelievably so when it comes to beer (CZK 30–50, about €1.20–2.00 for half a liter at a pub). Housing is rising but still far below Western Europe. Do I need to speak Czech? For daily student life, no. For dealing with landlords and bureaucracy, having a Czech-speaking friend helps enormously. University international offices can assist. Monthly budget? CZK 14,000–20,000/month (€560–800) for housing, food, transport, and going out — among Europe’s best values.
