Seattle Student Housing 2026: Areas Near UW, Seattle U & Bellevue College

Seattle is a tech powerhouse (Amazon, Microsoft) with a stunning natural setting — Puget Sound, the Olympic Mountains, and Mount Rainier framing the skyline. The University of Washington is one of America’s top public universities, and the city’s coffee and music culture (Starbucks, Nirvana, Jimi Hendrix) runs deep. Housing is expensive but less so than SF or NYC.

UW (University District)

U District: The neighborhood surrounding UW’s campus. The Ave (University Way NE) is the main strip — cheap eats, used bookstores, and bubble tea shops. Older apartment buildings and newer mid-rises. Rooms USD 700–1,200/month.

Wallingford: West of campus, one of Seattle’s most charming neighborhoods. Craftsman homes, independent shops, Gas Works Park with the best skyline view in the city. 10–15 min walk to UW. Rooms USD 800–1,400/month.

Ravenna & Wedgwood: North of UW, more residential and quieter. Popular with grad students. 10–15 min walk or short bus. Rooms USD 750–1,300/month.

Seattle U & Seattle Central College (Capitol Hill)

Capitol Hill: Seattle’s LGBTQ+ heart, music scene epicentre, and best cafe density in the city. Seattle University is right here. Rooms USD 800–1,500/month.

First Hill: Adjacent to Capitol Hill, slightly quieter, near the hospitals (Seattle’s medical district). Rooms USD 800–1,400/month.

Central District: Historically Black neighborhood southeast of Capitol Hill, rapidly gentrifying but retaining character. Rooms USD 700–1,300/month.

Tech Internship Housing (Summer)

Seattle absorbs thousands of summer interns from Amazon, Microsoft, Google, Meta, and dozens of startups. Summer sublets spike in June–September:

Seattle’s Link Light Rail now runs from Northgate to Angle Lake, with the U District, Capitol Hill, downtown, and the airport all connected. Live near a station and you can live further out for US$100–200/month in rent savings. Roosevelt, Northgate, and Beacon Hill are worth checking.

FAQ

How does Seattle compare to SF? 20–30% cheaper for housing. More laid-back, less tech monoculture. The weather is the biggest difference — Seattle has 9 months of grey drizzle (October–June). The summers are perfect. Do I need a car? No. The Link Light Rail + bus network covers the city well. UW students get a heavily subsidized U-PASS transit pass. What’s the Seattle Freeze? The local meme about Seattleites being polite but hard to befriend. Joining student clubs and activities breaks through it fast.
